Fall 2016 Program at the Galerie de l’UQAM

July 14, 2016 – The Galerie de l’UQAM unveils its programming for fall 2016. To open the season, the public will be able to view the work of Yann Pocreau, artist in residence at the Galerie this summer. His project addressing the links between art, architecture, health and light will be presented in parallel with the exhibition Away from Keyboard by Lieven Meyer, focusing on reconfigurations of classical sculpture in the Web 2.0 era. Then, as part of La Biennale de Montréal, the Galerie will host works by Luis Jacob and the Thirteen Black Cats collective.

Starting in September, the Casino Luxembourg will be the last stop on the tour of the exhibition Aude Moreau, The Political Nightfall, while the virtual exhibition The Painting Project continues in the Virtual Museum of Canada.

EXHIBITIONS AT THE GALLERY

• Yann Pocreau. Patrimoines
  under the Galerie’s residency program

  The starting point of Patrimoines is the immanent dismantling of the Hôpital Saint-Luc in Montreal to make room for the new mega-hospital, the Centre Hospitalier de Université de Montréal. With privileged access to the CHUM, artist Yann Pocreau focuses on our attachment to the built environment and its association with memories of our recent individual and collective history. The resulting project is a dialogue between tangible and intangible heritage, artworks and objects, stories and artifacts, including a room from the Hôpital Saint-Luc reconstructed in the Galerie. The fruit of work carried out under a summer residency at the Galerie de l’UQAM, Patrimoines raises questions about art and health, memory, light and their impact on our well-being.

• Lieven Meyer. Away from Keyboard
  Graduating Master’s student in Visual and Media Arts, UQAM

  In Western cultural heritage, classical sculpture represents an ideal of beauty and serves as an emblem of political and military power. In Away from Keyboard (AfK), Lieven Meyer tries to detect the emergence of Neoclassicism 2.0 in the aesthetics of social networks like Second Life. On that platform, the expression AfK indicates the user’s absence from the keyboard while still present in the virtual world through the intermediary of an avatar. The exhibition attempts to explore this bipolar phenomenon, between presence and absence, tangible and intangible. By creating a bronze sculpture based on the digital body of the avatar, and documenting this process through four video projections, the artist contemplates new configurations of beauty and power in a globalized, neo-liberal, technocratic civilization.

• La Biennale de Montréal, The Grand Balcony:
  Luis Jacob and Thirteen Black Cats
  Curator: Philippe Pirotte

  During the 2016 edition of La Biennale de Montréal, The Grand Balcony, the Galerie de l’UQAM will host the Toronto artist Luis Jacob and the collective Thirteen Black Cats. The works selected by curator Philippe Pirotte for The Grand Balcony betray a preference for “images” of deep historical resonance that materially and sensorially bind us to the here and now. Calling for a materialist and sensualist approach and betting on the liberatory potential of art, this exhibition invites us to rethink both the (im)possibility of an emancipation through pleasure—and its urgency. It summons us to affirm the pleasure we must take—a hedonist politics—far from the easy rewards of consumption. It entreats us to recast the pursuit of sensual pleasures, enlisting pleasure anew to play a decisive role in everyday life and political decision-making.
  
  

TOURING EXHIBITION

• Aude Moreau. The Political Nightfall

  After its great success at the Galerie de l’UQAM, at the Centre culturel canadien in Paris and at The Power Plant in Toronto, Aude Moreau. The Political Nightfall, the first major solo show of the artist, will end its tour in Luxembourg. This exhibition features a body of work developed by the artist over the last 7 years, with night-time panoramas of cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Montreal and Toronto. The photographic, film and sound works of Aude Moreau cast a hitherto unexampled light on the North American city, with its modernist grid, its towers soaring to breathtaking heights, its illuminated logos speaking the language of the multinationals, its solids that box us in, its voids that provide an exit.

  Presented as part of the Virtual Museum of Canada, an initiative of Canadian Heritage, The Painting Project includes sixty works by as many artists. Supported by extensive research, it sketches the outlines of current artistic practice in Canada and provides insightful commentary.
