New season: Galerie de l’UQAM unveils its 2024–2025 programming

FRENCH VERSION

July 2, 2024 — Galerie de l’UQAM’s 2024–2025 season makes a bold start with extensive fall programming dedicated to a dialogue between art and knowledge, presence and absence, objects and memory.

In September, the gallery will launch Faux plis par hypothèses, an ambitious project curated by Louise Déry, Director of Galerie de l’UQAM, and Marie-Hélène Leblanc, Director of Galerie UQO, that assembles thirteen bodies of work in five exhibition and research centres in Quebec: Galerie de l’UQAM, Galerie UQO, Galerie l’Œuvre de l’Autre (UQAC), Reford Gardens, and Foreman Art Gallery (Bishop’s University).

In November, the public is invited to discover Inventaires d’une collection, an exhibition conceived by museology researchers Lisa Bouraly, PhD candidate, and Marie Fraser, professor in the Department of Art History, that reveals the invisible history of the Collection d’œuvres d’art de l’UQAM through the prism of its inventories. This exhibition is presented as part of the activities of the CIÉCO research group (Collections et impératif évènementiel/The Convulsive Collections) and the New Uses of Collections in Art Museums Partnership. At the same time, Sarah-Jeanne Landry, a graduating master’s student in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM, presents À propos de la parole, an exhibition showing the formation of an autoethnographic narrative through the artist’s book.

The programming also includes the virtual exhibition Françoise Sullivan. Une ligne imaginaire, available online until May 2028, as well as L’art cultive, a series of free educational kits offered to Quebec teachers to introduce young students to contemporary art.

Curators: Louise Déry, Marie-Hélène Leblanc

Artists: Eruoma Awashish, Geneviève Chevalier, Club de prospection figurée, Anna Binta Diallo, Caroline Fillion, Maryse Goudreau, Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens, Sophie Jodoin, Emmanuelle Léonard, Mélanie Myers, Kosisochukwu Nnebe, Anahita Norouzi, Leila Zelli

The project Faux plis par hypothèses focuses on the unique role that the university gallery plays in considering the relationship between art and science. The project looks at contemporary art through the notion of creases (faux plis), considered here metaphorically as biases that are sometimes imposed, sometimes acquired, and sometimes transmitted. Inevitably, though not exclusively, present in university contexts, these creases infiltrate research and creation. How can we identify, undo, and transform them?

An exhibition produced by Galerie de l’UQAM and Galerie UQO as part of Faux plis par hypothèses, a project supported by UQAM, UQO, the Chief Scientist of Quebec, and the Fonds de recherche du Québec.

November 13, 2024 – January 18, 2025

This exhibition tells the invisible history of the Collection d’œuvres d’art de l’UQAM through the inventories that have constituted and structured it over time. The exhibition highlights the lives of objects, their origins, and even their disappearance or destruction. Inventories are invaluable witnesses to how a collection is created, enriched, transformed, and exhibited. By assembling almost one hundred works and archival documents, the project reveals underlying narratives, ranging from the first objects collected by the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, between 1924 and 1968, to current digital databases. Conceived as a collaborative exercise, the exhibition also seeks to make several voices coexist and to imagine improbable encounters between artworks.

The exhibition is presented as part of the activities of the CIÉCO research group and the New Uses of Collections in Art Museums partnership.

À propos de la parole

Artist: Sarah-Jeanne Landry
Graduating Master’s Student in Visual and Media Arts, UQAM

“There are times when my ability to speak vanishes, my throat chokes up, my mind empties, and words become confused. This intrigued me. I thought that there was something there to untangle and explore. So I started recording myself every day in order to consider my relationship to speech.”

The exhibition À propos de la parole by Sarah-Jeanne Landry caries out an analysis of this self-reflective thinking: a zealous endeavour, bordering on madness, that embraces its own excesses. The exhibition presents the outcome of Landry’s research into the possibilities of documenting micro-performance through words, from an internal and subjective perspective as much as possible, and of giving form to archives through a series of artist’s books.

VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

Until May 2028

Curator: Louise Déry

Building on the exhibition Françoise Sullivan: The 1970s, presented in June 2021 at Galerie de l’UQAM, the virtual exhibition Françoise Sullivan. Une ligne imaginaire grew out of the discovery of new information and unknown works from the 1970s. During those years, Sullivan discovered several conceptual and Arte Povera artists in Italy, leading her to explore new correlations between thought, text, image, and gesture. Her work at the time was based in photography, film, text, and performance, embracing the realities that prolonged the impulse of Refus global from 1948. Her artistic activity was permeated by the student, feminist, union, social, and political unrest that unfurled before her eyes. Curated by Louise Déry, an “imaginary line” is drawn on a horizon that merges art, life, time, and the world in every moment.

EDUCATIONAL KITS

L’art cultive

L’art cultive is a new series of educational kits developed by Galerie de l’UQAM team. Through this initiative, the gallery wishes to provide Quebec teachers with resources and tools they can use to introduce their students to contemporary art. The kits aim to show the scope and variety of the issues addressed by artists today, as well as emphasize art’s vital place in the conversations animating our living, educational, and working environments. Built around exhibitions recently presented at Galerie de l’UQAM, the L’art cultive kits offer reproductions of works, exhibition views, video clips, textual information, as well as directions for initiating discussions and creative projects with young audiences.
