May 31th, 2024 – This fall, Galerie de l’UQAM and Galerie UQO teams will unveil Faux plis par hypothèses, curated by Louise Déry and Marie-Hélène Leblanc, a project that assembles thirteen bodies of work in five exhibition and research centres in Quebec. The curators explore questions of languages and identities, terrestrials and territories, structures and institutions, through the idea of “creases” (faux plis).

“The conceptual framework of this project is based on the notion of creases, considered here metaphorically as biases that are sometimes imposed, sometimes acquired, and sometimes transmitted. Inevitably, though not exclusively, present in university contexts, these creases infiltrate research and creation. How can we identify, undo, and transform them?” ask Louise Déry and Marie-Hélène Leblanc.

The project, supported by Rémi Quirion, Chief Scientist of Quebec, focuses particularly on the unique role that university galleries play in considering the relationship between art and science.

“The Faux plis worksite is a proposition that aligns perfectly with my vision of the mesh, which I’ve promoted since I took up the post as Chief Scientist, that is mobilizing researchers in all sectors, breaking down disciplinary boundaries, focusing on knowledge sharing and trans-sectoral collaboration, and engaging with daring projects,” explains Rémi Quirion.

Faux plis par hypothèses is the outcome of three years of work carried out in three phases: Faire autrement (doing things differently), Faire chantier (making a worksite) and Faire exposition (making an exhibition). At the completion of this initiative, after fruitful artistic and scientific overlaps, the curators present the results of their research and works of artists in the university galleries that they direct as well as in three partner places.

The project is supported by the Université du Québec à Montréal, Université du Québec en Outaouais, the Chief Scientist of Quebec, and the Fonds de recherche du Québec.
