EMR-printemps-erable-1November 1st, 2012 – The UQAM Centre de Design presents Création en temps de crise sociale [Creation in a Time of Social Upheaval], a retrospective exhibition of the work of the École de la Montagne Rouge, curated by Frédéric Metz, designer and professor emeritus at the UQAM School of Design. The exhibition showcases the work of this graphics collective, which designed the emblematic posters and slogans for the fight against tuition hikes in 2012. You can see how this group of artists, mainly Graphic Design students at UQAM, channelled their commitment into providing an image for the Maple Spring.

Creation in a Time of Social Upheaval
EMR-combat-avenir-1The Quebec student movement of spring 2012 quickly evolved into a general social protest movement with a host of arguments in favour of access to education as a basis for a better and more just society. With the awakening of the student movement, the École de la Montagne Rouge was born at the UQAM School of Design. Inspired by Black Mountain College, an experimental American university founded in the 1940s, this creative student organization, in just six months, produced an impressive body of artifacts, several of which became familiar to the public at various demonstrations.

Through action, philosophy and graphic research, the École de la Montagne Rouge offers an original aesthetic approach to protest movements, as well as an alternative way to leave an enduring reminder of the Quebec Spring.

EMR-atelier-1Following residencies at the FOFA Gallery at Concordia University and the Interference Archive in Brooklyn, New York, the École de la Montagne Rouge is coming home to the UQAM Centre de Design. The exhibition provides an overview of their work between February and September 2012. Posters, sketches, photographs, videos, sets, experiments, historical documentation and working tools shed light on the design collective's creative process, reflecting their hope for a better society.
